On this project I was working with another waller from the area, this is my first contract working in the north of england.

Stone cladding for an extension to a lodge

This is the current project I am working on, building stone over concrete block to create the effect of a traditional build.

The stone work has yet to be pointed and air vents fitted. I've copied a template of an original iron vent to be more in keeping with a tradition build.

The client commissioned me to also build doors made to fit the two openings left in the extension.

As an extra for the client I decided to make replica steel air vents to suit the original cast iron ones as I felt modern plastic ones would have spoiled the build.

Date Stone

Date Stone 2012

This is a date stone which I was working on in my spare time. The stone was a rough piece of granite. I had to dress the stone to put a new face on it before I could inscribe the date.

Fireplace

Exposed Fireplace

This was a fireplace I exposed back to the bare stone. It had formally been covered in plaster and the hearth was filled in with brick. Once i removed all the plaster and brick I cleaned the faces of the stone and picked out and repointed around the joints of the stonework using a lime mortar.

This was my first project working for my own business Alasdair Mackenzie Stonemasonery.
The client a family friend had a rough idea of what they wanted for the design and from that I was able to produce a build that they were very happy with.
I sourced the stone locally, reclaimed from an old cottage, it consisted of local granite and windstone.

The client specified that they wanted an opening to walk into the area, I was able to use an old sandstone lintel which I split to create two gateposts as a feature in the wall.

For this build I used a tradition style of random rubble building, finished off with a level cope, it was a wet wall built using a cement based mortar, usually lime mortar is used in conjunction with stone ,but due to the cost of lime and the clients budget it was cheaper to use cement.

Due to access the founds were all dug by hand, there was quite a bit of marking out involved as the ground was quite uneven.
